What Are Self-Adhesive Labels? Types, Uses and Benefits
Published on May 27, 2026
Self-adhesive labels, also known as pressure-sensitive labels, are labels that stick to surfaces when pressure is applied. Unlike wet-glue labels that require moisture or heat to activate the adhesive, self-adhesive labels come ready to apply with a pre-coated adhesive backing.
How Self-Adhesive Labels Work
A self-adhesive label consists of three layers: the face material (the visible printed layer), the adhesive (which bonds to the surface), and the liner (a protective backing that is peeled away before application). When the liner is removed, the adhesive is exposed and the label can be pressed onto the target surface.
The adhesive is activated by pressure rather than heat, water, or solvents. This makes application straightforward and eliminates the need for specialized equipment in many cases.
Types of Self-Adhesive Labels
Paper Labels
Paper labels are the most common and cost-effective type. They are suitable for indoor applications where moisture and abrasion resistance are not primary concerns. Common uses include shipping labels, retail price tags, and office labels.
Vinyl (PVC) Labels
Vinyl labels offer superior durability and water resistance. They can withstand outdoor exposure, UV light, and frequent handling. These are commonly used on products that face demanding conditions such as outdoor equipment, beverage bottles, and chemical containers.
BOPP Labels
Biaxially Oriented Polypropylene (BOPP) labels provide excellent moisture and oil resistance. They are widely used in the food and beverage industry because they meet food contact safety requirements and maintain their appearance in refrigerated or humid environments.
PET Labels
PET (Polyethylene Terephthalate) labels offer a premium appearance with excellent clarity and heat resistance. They are often used for cosmetics, personal care products, and electronics where a high-end look is required.
Foil Labels
Foil labels, available in gold, silver, and holographic variants, create a metallic finish that enhances product perceived value. They are popular for wine bottles, specialty foods, cosmetics, and promotional products.

Benefits for Businesses
Self-adhesive labels offer several advantages for businesses of all sizes. They are easy to apply, reducing labor costs in labeling operations. Available in virtually any shape, size, and material, they accommodate diverse product requirements. With high-quality digital and flexographic printing, they deliver sharp, consistent results even at large volumes.
For companies with automated packaging lines, roll-form self-adhesive labels integrate seamlessly with labeling machines, improving throughput and consistency compared to manual application methods.
Choosing the Right Label
Selecting the right self-adhesive label depends on several factors: the application surface, environmental conditions, required durability, regulatory requirements, and budget. For food products, food-grade materials and FDA-compliant inks are essential. For outdoor use, UV-resistant vinyl with permanent adhesive is typically recommended.
If you are unsure which label type is best for your product, a custom label supplier can provide material samples and recommendations based on your specific application requirements.
